A comparison between lumped and distributed filter models in wavelength-division multiplexed soliton systems

چکیده
The effects of lumped and distributed filtering on soliton interactions are considered in a dispersion-managed transmission link when the dispersion steps approximate the lossramplification profile. A detailed comparison of the collision-induced timing shifts and corresponding timing jitter for both lumped and distributed filtering models is carried out. Ž . Ž . In particular, we show that: i there are some differences between the predictions obtained by the two models; however, ii Ž . in all cases of practical interest i.e., non-negligible bit error rates the estimates originating from the distributed model represent a good approximation to the results obtained with the lumped model. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Four-wave mixing in wavelength-division-multiplexed soliton systems: damping and amplification.
Four-wave mixing in wavelength-division-multiplexed soliton systems with damping and amplification is studied. An analytical model is introduced that explains the dramatic growth of the four-wave terms. The model yields a resonance condition relating the soliton frequency and the amplifier distance. It correctly predicts all essential features regarding the resonant growth of the four-wave cont...
متن کاملFour-wave mixing in wavelength–division- multiplexed soliton systems: ideal fibers
Analytic expressions for four-wave-mixing terms in an ideal, lossless wavelength–division-multiplexed soliton system are derived with an asymptotic expansion of the N-soliton solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The four-wave contributions are shown to grow from a vanishing background and then to decay. Their importance becomes evident in real, nonideal fibers, where they grow by an ...
متن کاملOn timing Jitter in wavelength-division multiplexed soliton systems
Collision-induced timing shifts in a wavelength-division multiplexed soliton system are computed when damping, amplification, filtering and positive dispersion management following the loss profile are included. A statistical analysis is presented which takes into account the resulting effect of the large number of collisions occurring in the fiber. Analytic expressions are derived for the root...
متن کاملOptimal Dispersion Maps in Filtered Wavelength Division Multiplexed Soliton Systems
A Lagrangian formulation is used to describe the dynamics of a two-channel, filtered and periodically amplified, dispersion managed soliton system. Two-step periodic dispersion maps that minimize residual time displacements due to inter-channel collisions are obtained.
متن کاملIncomplete collisions of wavelength-division multiplexed dispersion-managed solitons
Interactions of wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) dispersion-managed solitons solitons are studied by means of numerical simulations of both the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation and the nonlocal equation of the NLS type that describes pulse dynamics in systems with strong dispersion management. The interaction properties are found to depend significantly on the values of system paramete...
